Product Description

Book One in The Preacher’s Toolbox series tackles one of the most important forms of preaching for the 21st century

The first book in Hendrickson’s new Preacher’s Toolbox series brings together a “who’s who” group of today’s most influential pastors, who share their understanding of prophetic preaching as well as their skills. The book is divided into two sections, The Calling of Prophetic Preaching and The Craft of Prophetic Preaching, which deliver clear themes and practical takeaways on the art of preaching prophetically. Speaking with grace and authority, preachers such as Francis Chan, Mark Buchanan, John Ortberg, Mark Driscoll, Timothy Keller, and Anne Graham Lotz offer Biblical and personal messages on prophetic preaching while addressing commonly held questions such as:

• What’s the purpose and aim of prophetic preaching?
• How do you do it?
• What are the common misconceptions?
• How does a preacher challenge but not overwhelm people with the call of discipleship?

Reviews

“This collection of articles reflects upon a topic in much need of resurgence amongst today’s pulpits. Preaching should not be seen simply as a commentary on a passage or a string of illustrations or stories from personal experience, but a proclamation of a message from God. These articles attempt to bring the related issues of this notion of preaching to the forefront. Each contributor is a seasoned preacher themselves and, though most share similar presuppositions, there is wide variety between their preaching methods and emphases.

“Chan emphasises the prophetic ‘burden’ of the preacher, necessarily bound up with the preacher’s personal experiences and emotions, whilst keeping the text of Scripture as the sermon’s primary content. McDonald highlights prophetic preaching as characterised by authority and urgency, whilst aware of the need to be ‘authoritative’ without being ‘authoritarian’. Several others engage with the preaching of the Old Testament prophets, the role of the Spirit’s anointing, the difference between teaching and preaching, the need for both compassion and rebuke, and preaching for revival. There are also several interviews which are very insightful, often providing personal reflections on the preaching ministry.

“One of the stand-out chapters (Ulmer) reflects on the theological miracle that fallible preachers are chosen as mouthpieces for God’s word. . . . There are some excellent, invaluable insights in here that will be of great service, challenge and encouragement to any preacher.”
