Martin Luther (1483Ė1546) was a German monk whose teachings inspired the Reformation and deeply influenced the doctrines and culture of the Lutheran and Protestant traditions. Luther emphasized salvation based on faith in the merits of Jesus Christ alone and not on human efforts to earn Godís favor. At the heart of the gospel, in Lutherís estimation, was the doctrine of justification by faithóthe teaching that Christís own righteousness is imputed to those who believe, and on that ground alone, they are accepted by God. Martin Luther dealt the symbolic blow that began the Reformation when he nailed his ninety-five theses to the door of the Wittenberg church. That document contained an attack on papal abuses and the sale of indulgences by Catholic Church officials.
In this volume the reader will find fifty of Martin Lutherís most significant sermons, selected and organized with the lay reader in mind. His sermons reflect the heart of his thoughts on the Christian faith and his ideas for practical life in that faith. The reader will gain a deeper understanding of Lutherís thinking on topics important to todayís Christian as well as insight into Lutherís contribution to Christian practice and thought.
ďThis handsome, affordable volume reproduces select sermons from The Sermons of Martin Luther: the Church Postils, translated and edited by John Nicholas Lenker, et al. . . . The burgundy-colored spine of the book is a good match to Lutheran Service Book. This edition includes an easier to read and larger typeface and format than the previous edition. The new cover is eye-catching. There is a new Forward at the beginning and brief indices in the back indicating each sermonís source as well as each sermonís Biblical text. Overall, it reproduces some of Lutherís Church Postils with the same English Bible translation as the previous edition. . .
ďI pray that this volume would expose Lutherans and non-Lutherans alike to the venerable Dr. Luther. In print he continues to provide Biblical clarity in the face of so much doctrinal error and reformer that conserves tradition helpful to the Gospel in contrast to those who encourage lax or novel practices in the church.
ďThis devotional sermon collection is a concise and affordable introduction to the theological writings of Martin Luther. It would be very appropriate as a gift. Buy one for you and one for a friend. Listen to Dr. Luther because he preaches Godís Word. He preaches Christ crucified. That is why all Christians need to read more Luther.Ē
