Product DescriptionStanley E. Porter focuses upon the depiction of Paul in the book of Acts from literary-critical, rhetorical, and theological perspectives, among several others. The essays within this volume examine various topics related to the Paul of Acts such as the extent to which the “we” passages of Acts should function as a source regarding Paul, and the theology and perspective of these passages in terms of their portrait of him. Porter analyzes the Acts passages that deal with Paul and the Holy Spirit and the question of whether Paul is an epistolographer or rhetorician. He examines Paul’s missionary speeches and apologetic speeches in Acts. Porter also looks at Acts 21 and Paul’s arrest in Jerusalem before he closes with an analysis of some common conceptions and misconceptions of the Paul of Acts and the Paul of the letters. The Library of Pauline Studies is a series of books exploring key issues in Pauline and related studies. This series is edited by Stanley E. Porter, Principal, Dean, and Professor of New Testament at McMaster Divinity College, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
Reviews“A fairly traditional position is given strong reinforcement here by a scholar who is astonishingly well-read in the literature, writes with great precision and clarity, presents opposing views fairly, is not afraid to say ‘we don’t know,’ and makes his own positive, creative contribution to the understanding of Acts.” "Porter's broad and deep familiarity with the literature, well-honed exegetical and linguistic skills, and fairness to viewpoints and conclusions differing from his own make this book required reading for Pauline and Acts specialists and is recommended to all serious students who seek expert guidance regarding these matters." “Porter takes a conservative position, positing that the separation between the Paul of Acts and the Paul of the letters is not as great as many suppose and that the author of Acts (if not Luke himself) was someone very much like the traditional figure. Porter does not argue a single hypothesis in the book. Instead, he has written a series of studies and clearly does not intend to present a complete analysis of all the ways Paul is depicted in Acts. Nor does Porter propose to study the book of Acts as a whole. Rather, he is selective in the topics he presents and focuses on several of the most important issues raised in current scholarship concerning Paul and Acts. . . . “This is a fine book in the tradition of F. F. Bruce, Colin Hemer, and other conservative Acts scholars and makes for informed reading mainly for upper-level students, scholars and well-read non-specialists.”
