5.0 Getting Published---Trade Books

5.1 What types of books do you publish in the trade books category?
Hendrickson Publishers welcomes proposals for books on Christian living topics, Biblical studies and reference works for the layperson, devotionals, and related topics. We focus on trade books that:

1. Help the reader get into the Bible, directly or indirectly.
2. Facilitate confrontation and interaction with Scripture toward a positive change in thought or action.
3. Give a hunger to studying, understanding and applying Scripture.
4. Encourage and facilitate one’s personal growth in such areas as personal devotion and a skillful use of the Bible.

We have a broad interest in biblically oriented books. Our interests, though, do not include fiction, poetry, children/youth books, personal-experience stories, autobiographical stories and contemporary prophetic books.

5.2 How do I make initial contact regarding trade books?
Before any book proposal is submitted, please send—via e-mail to editorial@hendrickson.com or via letter—a 2-3 paragraph summary of your manuscript, including the page count. Then at that point we can inform you if it fits into our current publishing plan.

5.3 How do I submit a trade book manuscript proposal to Hendrickson Publishers?
Prospective authors should include a cover letter, a résumé, a prospectus, and a writing sample, preferably from the proposed book. If you have a completed manuscript, please say so in the cover letter, but please do not send in the whole manuscript unless we request it. We cannot return an unsolicited submission unless you enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope. Please address your submission to:

Hendrickson Publishers
Attn: Editorial Department / Book Proposals
140 Summit Street
P.O. Box 3473
Peabody, MA 01961
USA

5.4 May I call on the phone to “try out” my book idea first?
Please do not call, as we receive many unsolicited projects every year, and our staff is not large enough to handle calls from all of these writers.

5.5 How long will it take to hear from you once I submit my proposal?
It commonly takes several months for a decision to be reached and communicated to an author.

5.6 What is your policy on simultaneous submissions?
Multiple submissions are discouraged; if you are also submitting your proposal to other publishers, please be sure to let us know.

5.7 What should I include in my trade book manuscript proposal?
• Title of the Book. Indicate the tentative title (and subtitle) of the book, and suggest alternative titles and subtitles.
• Description of the Book. In 200–250 words describe the proposed book’s focus, purpose, thesis, and argument. What are you advocating, defending, or otherwise trying to achieve in the book? How would you persuade a potential reader to buy this particular book? Describe the unique contributions of this book and criticisms you expect to receive.
• Qualifications. Describe your qualifications to write the book, including your education, prior publications in this area, and experience communicating with the intended audience.
• Table of Contents and Outline. List your intended chapter titles and subsections. Summarize the focus and development of each chapter, explaining how the chapter advances the book’s goal or argument.
• Audience and Market. For what specific audience will you write this book? The groups of readers that Hendrickson Publishers reaches include lay persons, pastors, other religious professionals, college students, seminary students, graduate school students, and professors. No one book reaches all these audiences, and the author should clearly have in mind what that market is.
• Competition. What other books have been published recently on this topic? How does your work compare to them?
• Nontextual Material. Indicate if your manuscript will include artwork, drawings, photographs (black and white or color), charts, or tables.
• Manuscript Length. What is the estimated length of the proposed manuscript, double-spaced on 8 1/2" x 11" paper with 1-inch margins and a standard font (12-point Times New Roman or the like)? If your word processor provides a word count, include this.
• Date of Completion. Indicate the date by which you could submit a complete and final draft of your manuscript.
• Sample Pages. Enclose a sample of 20–30 pages, perhaps from the introduction or the first chapter, which shows your writing style. This sample should be representative of the book as a whole and its main argument or provide a good overview of the book. It should be double-spaced and printed on one side only of loose sheets.
• Electronic Manuscript Submission. If your proposal is accepted we will ask you to submit the manuscript on paper and in electronic form. You should discuss what formats are acceptable for submission before preparing your final draft.

5.8 If you choose not to accept my material, will you return it to me?
Please send a self-addressed, stamped envelope, and we will be glad to return your material.

5.9 What is your royalty rate, and do you pay advances?
We can discuss rates or advances as your project nears the contract stage.
